Home to the San Carlos Institute, founded in the 19th century by Cuban exiles – especially in the tobacco and cigar industry of Key West.  It’s mission became to support the Cuban independence movement from Spain. This iconic Duval Street building is actually the third location for the organization. Its most notable historic moment occurred when Jose Marti, an important figure in Cuban independence, gave a speech announcing a newly united coalition of exiles seeking Cuba’s revolt of Spanish rule.
