Aquarium Turtles - Key West 1970s Postcard
This postcard brings to mind the turtling industry that was huge in Key West decades ago. From throughout the Carribbean, turtles were brought to Key West for most of the twentieth century. There are many postcards of the era showing the turtle pens of Key West, along with people gawking at the marvelous creatures awaiting slaughter. We won't go there. Hunted to near extinction, turtles were almost eliminated from the Florida Keys. Fortunately today, the turtles are protected, and they are making a very slow rebound. Today they greatest enemy of the sea turtle is plastic. Thinking that it is food, turtles will eat the plastic, unaware of it's undigestibility and danger. Could you tell we love sea turtles? Want to do your part? If you should see some plastic on the shoreline, or when you are out on a boat on the water (maybe snorkeling/diving/fishing), pick it up and put it where it belongs...out of reach of turtles. Feel good. You are part of the solution. Back to Key West History page |
